B.A. in Social Equity and Governance
New Major - Coming in 2026
Program Overview
This degree is designed for students who want to lead change. This major gives you the tools to understand how inequality operates—and how to dismantle it. You’ll explore real-world issues like racism, gender inequality, economic disparity, and political power, while learning how individuals and communities resist injustice and create lasting impact.
What makes this major unique is its direct connection to public service and leadership. Housed in the School of Public Affairs, the program combines social justice theory with practical skills in governance and policy. You'll learn how government systems can either maintain or transform inequality, and how to make those systems work for everyone. This program is action-oriented: it's not just about learning what’s wrong, but developing the tools to do something about it.
As a student, you’ll benefit from partnerships with local agencies like the City and County of San Diego’s Offices of Equity and Racial Justice. These real-world connections offer opportunities for internships, mentorship, and career pathways that focus on equity work. You’ll be part of a forward-thinking program that aligns with SDSU’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and community engagement.
What is Social Equity?
Social equity is the concept of ensuring fair and just access to resources, opportunities, and services for all people, especially those who have been historically marginalized or disadvantaged. Unlike equality, which treats everyone the same, equity acknowledges that people start from different places and may require different types of support to achieve similar outcomes.
