Bio

Valerie Stahl is an Assistant Professor of City Planning in the School of Public Affairs at San Diego State University. Her mixed-methods research focuses on three key areas of urban planning and policy: public and affordable housing, community engagement, and zoning. She observes these issues through the lens of racial and economic (in)justice in planning, primarily focusing on planning processes in neighborhoods that are facing pressures of austerity, gentrification, and displacement. The goal of Valerie's work is to promote just and equitable urban development through policy-relevant and community-centered research. Her research has been used in campaigns on rent stabilization, the privatization of public housing, and fair housing initiatives. Prior to her Ph.D., Valerie worked at the Institute for Policy Integrity at NYU School of Law and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in Washington, D.C. She holds a Ph.D. in Urban Planning from Columbia University, a master's in Urban Affairs from Sciences Po Paris, and a BA in Social and Cultural Analysis and Romance Languages from New York University.
