Bio
Burrel Vann Jr an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice in the School of Public Affairs at San Diego State University. He recently received his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, Irvine, where he was affiliated with the Jack W. Peltason Center for the Study of Democracy and the Data Science Initiative.
Burrel's research centers on cultural and political change. Specifically, his work investigates how advocacy organizations shift public perceptions about drugs, and how policymakers and voters are influenced by these shifts. His prior work focused on how organizations shape voting behavior. Burrel's research agenda covers areas in political sociology, drugs and crime, social movements, and race, while employing a broad range of quantitative and computational methods.
This research has appeared in American Sociological Review, Mobilization, and Sociology Compass, has been supported by the Ford Foundation, the Center for the Study of Democracy, and the Data Science Initiative, and has won awards from the ASA Section on Methodology and the SSSP Drinking and Drugs Division.
