Dr. Roger W. Caves is a professor of city planning in the School of Public Affairs at San Diego State University. He received his B.A. in Political Science (1975) and a master in Urban Studies (1978) from Old Dominion University and his Ph.D. in Urban Affairs and Public Policy from the University of Delaware (1982). He has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of the American Planning Association, The International Journal of Urban Planning and Policy, California Politics and Policy, and the International Journal of E-Planning Research. Dr. Caves has published numerous articles related to urban planning, housing, community development and information technology, environmental planning, alternative structures of local government, human service needs, defense conversion, direct democracy, and public service. He is the author of Land Use Planning: The Ballot Box Revolution (1992); editor of Exploring Urban America: An Introductory Reader (1995); co-author of Planning in the USA, 2d, 3rd and 4th editions (2003, 2008, and 2014); and editor of Encyclopedia of the City (2005). He is also co-editor with Dr. Fritz Wagner on Community Livability (2012) and co-editor with Fritz Wagner of Livable Cities from a Global Perspective (2018). Current areas of research focus on community gardens, cities and sustainable development, livable cities, smart cities, and the use of information and communications technologies in planning.
