Dr. Alan Mobley is Associate Professor of Public Affairs and Criminal Justice and Founding Executive Director of Project Rebound at San Diego State University. He received his Ph.D. in Criminology, Law & Society from the University of California, Irvine in 2001. Dr. Mobley is a co-founder of initiatives focused on inclusion and social justice, including the Convict Criminology group within the American Society of Criminology, the justice-impacted advocacy initiative All Of Us or None, and the Inmate Council Program within the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. He is also an internationally recognized expert on restorative justice practices. For over 20 years, he has conducted trainings in the US and internationally on personal coping strategies, dialogic practices, and Council circle work. He primarily works with highly traumatized populations, including residents of high crime communities, schools, and inmates and staff in prisons and jails. His work has resulted in influential research reports and presentations for professional bodies, national and state governments, corporations, research foundations, and philanthropy. He is very active in peer-based grassroots empowerment work, the cultivation of mindfulness practices for vulnerable persons, and nature-based mentoring and human development. Dr. Mobley has published numerous book chapters and peer-reviewed articles on risk, trauma, and resiliency experiences, particularly related to living in conditions of structural disadvantage, stigma, incarceration and post-incarceration adaptation. His current projects involve higher education for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people, and learning from society- or community-wide instances of harm, such as internecine conflicts and civil wars. Through it all, his greatest teachers continue to be his teenage children.
